David’s Response
“And now, O Lord God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said. And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee,” 2 Samuel 7:25, 26.
When our oldest son was small, he liked to take his birthday or Christmas money to town and buy a new toy. Most all of us can remember the excitement of taking our few dollars to the toy section and picking out a new action figure, toy car or doll. But as we all know, sometimes options are not a good thing because it can be hard to choose which item we want. Usually, our son would buy the first thing he spotted that he could afford. We would tell him to weigh his purchase carefully because there might be something better at the next store. But he wanted what he wanted when he wanted it, and at the next store, he would invariably regret not waiting. David wanted to build a house for God, but God’s plan was for Solomon to build the Temple (2 Samuel 7:13, 1 Chronicles 28:6). The prophet Nathan explained to David that God’s plan for him was going to be eternally better than just building a physical Temple for God. God established an eternal covenant with David and his house (2 Samuel 7:16). David could have been frustrated, or he could have questioned God. Instead, he praised God for this marvelous blessing. “Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord God, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever” (2 Samuel 7:29).
JUST A THOUGHT: Too many times we want what we want when we want it. We forget that God’s plan is always perfect and always better.
