Wisdom Excels Folly
“Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all,” Ecclesiastes 2:13, 14
Solomon seemed in a dilemma, thinking about the end of his life and all he had done. Does it really matter how you live when this life comes to an end? The one thing you should remember is, even though Solomon seemed in despair and his mindset was such as what is the point of life, he said all this with the thought in mind that there is no point of life without God.
At the start of King Solomon’s reign, he asked for wisdom to rule righteously. God blessed not only with wisdom but riches also. The Lord did this because Solomon’s request for wisdom pleased Him. Even though Solomon was extremely wise, he allowed the desires of the flesh to take him away from serving the Lord with all his heart. So regrettably coming to the end of his life, sorrow had filled his spirit.
It is true, as Solomon said, that everything you have done or will do will one day be forgotten. So why bother? Because God has given us assurance that if you do all for His glory there is great reward. If you, like Paul, fight the good fight of faith, there will be a crown of righteousness for you. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3 to build upon the foundation of Jesus and any work you have done will abide forever. Jesus said, “Labour not for that meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life” (John 6:27).
Yes, everyone dies, the wise and the fool alike. That is why you need to set your mind on things above not on things of the earth (Colossians 3:2).
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Your life is not lived in vain when lived for the Lord, and you shall have your reward.
