Provisions for the Disciples

“The young pastor finished his schooling, and it was time to go home. He hadn’t been the best student if only judged by his marks in class or his gift for singing, but there was something different about him. He wasn’t passing through the Bible school on his way to a university education like so many did. He was studying to minister and that set him apart from most of the others. Following graduation, my late wife, Paula, gave him clothing and shoes and household goods—things any young man might need, not just for the journey home, but for what he hoped would be a wife and a family in the near future.” —Memoirs of a Missionary, Glen Knight
I can never forget the seeming embarrassment of the young pastor when we visited his place a year or so after his graduation. He had gathered several people from his village regularly for Bible study and worship and in a halting manner while we visited, they sang their hymns, off-key and either too slow or too fast or with altogether the wrong tune. Looking around his home where the little church also gathered for prayer and worship, the things that we had given him were missing. And we could not help but notice the clothing he wore. It was familiar to us from his first year in seminary. Paula knew in an instant what he had done, and she smiled. The young pastor had shared everything he had with the village and contentedly, he was left with the joy of passing it along to satisfy their needs. He demonstrated the true Christian spirit of the first century Jerusalem church which had set the practical pattern for all churches today.

AN AMAZING TRUTH: Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
