The Only True God
“For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places,” Psalm 135:5, 6.
In a world filled with competing ideologies and diverse belief systems, the psalmist anchors our hearts in the profound truth of the one true God. These verses resound with the conviction that the Lord is not merely a deity among many, but He stands supreme, unmatched in greatness and authority.
The psalmist’s declaration, “For I know” (verse 5), soars above intellectual understanding; it reflects a deep, personal and experiential understanding of God’s greatness. This knowledge is not based on speculation or human reasoning, but is born out of a relationship with the living God who reveals Himself to those who seek Him.
The statement that our Lord is above all gods confronts the ideas of polytheism. It serves as a powerful reminder that the God of Israel is the one and only God of all creation. His sovereignty extends beyond human boundaries, and He reigns supreme over the entire universe.
Verse 6 amplifies the greatness of the Lord by emphasizing His creative and sovereign authority. Whatever God pleases, He accomplishes in Heaven, on earth, in the seas and all deep places. This all-encompassing power underscores His unrivaled ability to govern every facet of existence, from the celestial realms to the depths of the sea.
As we contemplate these verses, let us be encouraged to anchor our faith in the one true God. In a world filled with shifting ideologies, cultural relativism and conflicting worldviews, the unchanging truth of God’s supremacy remains a steadfast foundation for our lives.
DAILY REMINDER
May we declare with confidence that the Lord is great, and He "is above all gods" (Psalm 135:5).
