From Obed to Adam, the Son of God

“Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God,” Luke 3:38.

When we think of Adam and Eve’s children, we probably think about Cain and Abel. After all, they are the two principal participants in the first recorded murder in human history. God rejected Cain’s offering and accepted the offering of Abel. Instead of providing an acceptable offering to God, Cain slew his brother Abel (Genesis 4:3-8). God’s Word records the faithfulness of Abel. “By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh” (Hebrews 11:4).

But there is another of Adam’s descendants that we need to remember, and that is Adam’s son Seth. As the lineage in Luke 3 tells us, Jesus Christ descended from him. Actually, Jesus was not a true blood descendant of Seth, because Jesus had no earthly father. Jesus was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit. Mary did not know a man (Luke 1:34), but God blessed her with the promised Seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:16).

But whereas Adam brought sin into the world, Jesus Christ brought salvation to us. “Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many” (Romans 5:14, 15).
