The Eyes of the Lord

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good,” Proverbs 15:3.

Did you ever do something wrong while out and about as a child only to discover that your mother knew about your wrongdoing before you got home? Were you ever about to do something wrong, and your mother would warn you against it even though she was not looking at you? Mothers know! As the saying goes, they must have eyes in the back of their heads and spies everywhere. She did not have spies, just good friends; she did not have literal eyes in the back of her head but knew you and what you were likely to do.

God is omniscient; He knows everything. God is not some uninvolved bystander to the events of the world, and no event is too small for His consideration. As we have said before, God allows or causes every event in His creation. God’s knowledge includes what is in our hearts and our thoughts. God knows the things that others do not. God sees our hypocrisy even if we think it is hidden.

It may seem odd that this verse is seemingly stuck randomly in the middle of several “real” proverbs. It is not odd at all. Proverbs makes numerous references to the eyes of God, and that is not an accident. Through the writer, God gives us instructions on how to act and periodic reminders that He is watching and assessing our behavior. This is God’s way of saying, “I have my eyes on you.”

Are we the same way in private and inside as we are to those around us? Are we clean inside and out, or are we white-washed tombs full of dead bones? (Matthew 23:27, 28). We may fool others and ourselves, but we never fool our Heavenly Father.

JUST A THOUGHT

Trying to hide our sins from God is like trying to pick up our house and throw it; we cannot.
