Trust in the Lord
“For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life. But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God,” Psalm 31:13, 14.
Stephen was a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ and lived a life devoted to Him and His church. He went about speaking openly and freely of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but this did not sit well with the non-believing Jews. They stirred up the people and the more Stephen spoke, the more enraged the mob became. He was taken out of the city surrounded by evil men with eyes full of vengeance and murder in their hearts. “And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:59). Stephen trusted the Lord with his very life and even in his death.
This Psalm of David shows the heart of the king of Israel who had many enemies and was all too familiar with distress and trouble surrounding him. Yet he too trusted his life to God and committed his spirit to Him. Trusting in the Lord is a complete surrender to God based on a confident assurance that He will always keep His word. “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12).
Surrendering your life to Christ will come with hardship. “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (II Timothy 3:12). However, you will never go through this life alone. Trust the Lord and stand upon the promises of God. Your Lord and Savior is there with you every step of the way. He will carry you through.
REFLECTION: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Psalm 56:3)
