Daily Devotional for Sunday, November 2
Four Things
“There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not,” Proverbs 30:18.
In verses 18-33, we read of four wonders in creation and four things that bring forth turmoil, urging us to ponder the wisdom in the natural world and human behavior.
The Wonders of Creation—verses 18, 19: These marvels in creation reflect the complexity and mystery of life. The eagle’s flight, the serpent’s movement, the ship’s navigation and the dynamics of love all point to God’s intricate design and the mysteries beyond human comprehension.
The Weight of Wickedness—verse 20: This highlights the deceptiveness of sin. It shows how the wicked can indulge in sin and yet deny guilt, portraying the profound moral blindness that sin can cause.
The Unsettling of Society—verses 21-23: Agur listed situations that disrupt societal harmony: a servant ruling, a fool filled with food, an unloved woman married, and a handmaid who displaces her mistress. These scenarios depict the chaos that arises when natural order and justice are upended.
The Wisdom of Small Creatures—verse 24: The ant, coney, locust and spider all teach us that wisdom and strength are not always in size but in diligence, community, preparation and persistence.
This passage invited us to contemplate the wisdom woven into creation and the consequences of ignoring God’s moral order, encouraging us to live with humility and discernment.
DAILY MEDITATION
God beautifully provided order when He created the universe. We can stand in awe with the writer of Proverbs that our loving and creative Father has given us all that we need to enjoy a good and godly life on this earth if we will submit to His order.
