A Promise for the Future
“We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for? If she be a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will enclose her with boards of cedar,” Song of Solomon 8:8, 9.
The culture of the family in the East is far different than the family traditions in the West. Even today, many traditions of the way of life we read in the Old Testament are still in existence. Verse 8 gave insight into how siblings looked after one another. The bride had a little sister who was not quite of the age to marry, but she and the brothers were thinking about when that day should come. In a sense, they were looking out for her, and they want her to be prepared for marriage.
“If she be a wall.” If she be chaste and not one who is flirtatious and gives herself to men, she will be honored. “If she be a door.” This gives reference to someone who is flirtatious and will give herself to men. Instead of honor, she will be restrained and protected by her family.
“For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:2). Paul was writing this to the church body in Corinth because they were allowing sexual sin. Your relationship with Jesus is one that should be pure and spotless from the world. Just as there is physical fornication, there is spiritual fornication. This would not be serving the Lord in Spirit and in truth under the covenant of His New Testament church. God’s desire for you is as a marriage is to one spouse, that you would serve the True and Living God.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Rally around other believers for protection against worldly influences. Realize the greatest relationship you have is with Christ.
