Jesus Called Levi
“And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him,”Luke 5:27-28
My husband made the kids sign up for band as their elective class in middle school. None of them seemed excited about this and even told us they would choose something completely different in high school. As it turned out, we have one studying in college to be a band director, one who served as drum major of the high school marching band and two who are still very much a part of the band and even get featured solos at concerts. Their obedience to their father changed their lives forever.
Levi, also known as Matthew, was a tax collector viewed as one of the most despised professions in Jewish society. Tax collectors were often seen as traitors working for the oppressive Roman government, known for corruption and extortion. Jesus did not look at his profession, He looked at Levi’s heart. He did not see a sinner beyond redemption, but a man with the potential to serve in His kingdom. With two simple words, “Follow me,” Jesus invited Levi to be a part of something incredible. Levi’s obedience, immediate and wholehearted, changed his life forever. He did not hesitate, debate or delay. He left behind his lucrative profession, wealth and security to walk with Jesus. His willingness to forsake everything for the call of Christ is a powerful example of faith and obedience. How often do we hesitate when God calls us? Are we willing to leave behind what is comfortable and familiar to follow Him wholeheartedly?
Levi’s transformation did not stop at following Jesus. He hosted a great feast in his home, inviting other tax collectors and sinners to meet the One who had changed his life. Instead of hiding his past, he used it as an opportunity to bring others to Jesus.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
True discipleship requires a willingness to leave behind anything that hinders our walk with Jesus.
