A False Witness
“A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow,” Proverbs 25:18.
Today’s passage provides insights into the destructive nature of a false witness and the virtues necessary for a righteous life. The passage begins with a stark comparison, “A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow” (verse 18). This vivid imagery highlights the severe harm caused by lies and deceit, likening false testimony to violent weapons that can shatter lives and relationships.
The subsequent verses, especially verse 19, warned against misplaced trust, “Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.” Trusting someone who is unreliable, especially in critical times, leads to pain and disappointment. This emphasized the importance of integrity and reliability in our character.
Verses 21, 22 provides a counterintuitive but powerful directive, “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.” This calls us to respond to hostility with kindness, reflecting God’s grace and potentially transforming hearts through our actions.
The passage concludes with exhortations against self-indulgence and lack of self-control. Verse 28 stated, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” Self-control is essential for spiritual and emotional fortification.
