Rejoice in Your Youth
“Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgement. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity,” Ecclesiastes 11:9, 10.
There comes a time for everyone when you just cannot do the things you once did. For everybody this time is different, and some are ready for it, and some are not. Still the best thing you can do as you are getting older is to remain as active as you can. At the time of this writing, I am in my mid-fifties, and I can attest that I already cannot do some things I once could. Some will say my age is not old, while younger ones will say, as my son has said, “You are getting old, Mom!” I guess I am on middle ground. Nonetheless, I can say with confidence these verses are true. While you are young, enjoy your life and work hard so you will see the rewards of your labor.
Some have the mentality of you “only live once, so do whatever you want.” This is not the lesson here. Solomon learned the hard way, and many are not much different, to not seek after the enjoyment and desires of your flesh and mind but rather enjoy all the things the Lord has given you. Enjoy your spouse, your children and grandchildren, your family and even the work you can do. If God’s plan for you is to be single, you will still have much to enjoy.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Live while you have life but with the mindset of “whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Colossians 3:23).
