The Shulamite’s Love
“Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon; for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions? If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds’ tents,” Song of Solomon 1:7, 8.
In the first few verses of Song of Solomon 1, a picture of passionate love for one another can be seen. Song of Solomon is a picture of God and His relationship with Israel and Christ and His Church. So why the vivid imagery of love and sex?
God is showing you how intimate He wants your relationship with Him to be. As far as human relationships are concerned, marriage is the most intimate relationship people can have with each other. Just as one loves, desires, thinks about, longs for and is dedicated to another through the marriage bond, you should have the same affection and desires for Christ. A desire to please Him, love Him, communicate with Him and just be with Him through study, prayer and praise.
The bridegroom looked upon his bride with adoration and affection. This is the way God looks upon you as His child. The bride is so in love with the bridegroom that she just wants to be with him and please him, and with the same respect, he loves her and is tender toward her.
Song of Solomon can be used not only as an intimate human relationship but also an intimate spiritual relationship. The Lord is my shepherd, a picture of Jesus taking care of us, gently and tenderly. The Shulamite woman went among the flocks looking for her beloved because she wanted to be with him.
Christ is the Good Shepherd, and His sheep know His voice, and they follow Him.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
How often is your relationship with Christ thought of so intimately?
