Prophecy of the Immediate Future

“And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?” Luke 21:5-7.

The disciples were captivated by the beauty and grandeur of the Temple. Its impressive structure and sacred significance made it seem indestructible, a permanent symbol of God’s presence. But Jesus, looking beyond the surface, saw what the eyes of man could not. He prophesied its complete destruction—a future event that would unfold just decades later in AD 70 when the Romans razed Jerusalem and the Temple to the ground.

Jesus’ words were startling. Not only did He predict the fall of something so revered, but He also showed that God’s plan would not be confined to buildings made by human hands. The Temple represented tradition, pride and national identity, but Jesus pointed to a greater truth: that God was preparing a New Covenant, not rooted in places, but in hearts.

The disciples, shaken and curious, asked, “When shall these things be?” (verse 7). Their concern was natural, but Jesus’ purpose was spiritual. He was preparing them not just for coming destruction, but for deeper faith. In a world where even sacred things can crumble, Jesus remains unshaken.

This passage reminds us that the things we value most in the world are temporary. We must build our faith not on what impresses the eye, but on what stands forever—the Word of Christ.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Even the most glorious structures of this world will fade, but the promises of Jesus endure. Anchor your hope not in what is seen, but in what is eternal. His Word will never fall.
