The Aged David’s Cries to God

“Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come,” Psalm 71:18.

Growing old is not for the faint of heart. For most, old age comes with many physical ailments that greatly restrict the individual from functioning in life as they once did. I have seen this up close and personal as my father recently came home on hospice after suffering a second stroke. The Lord has used him mightily throughout his life as a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ and a pastor of many of His churches. It is difficult to now see him in a weakened condition, but as long as the Lord keeps him here, He has a purpose for him. God is not finished with him yet.

No matter your age, the Lord will use you if you are a willing vessel. In this psalm, David poured out his heart to God for deliverance and strength in his old age. His ultimate desire was to show forth the Lord’s great power and righteousness to those of the present and future generations. Throughout the psalm, he mentioned his mouth, lips and tongue offering the praise to God in word and in song. He desired to remain useful to the Lord, glorifying Him until the day he died.

Our elderly brothers and sisters need encouragement and to be reminded how important they are in the Lord’s work. Their faithfulness is an example to the younger generations, and their wisdom is tobe cherished. Take time to listen and let them know they are loved and valued. If you are elderly, please know the Lord has you here for a purpose. Continue to give glory to God and praise Him for the years He has given you.

REFLECTION
“For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16).
