The Attitude of Watchfulness

“Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.  And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants,” Luke 12:37, 38.

In Luke 12:35-48, Jesus urged His followers to be ready for His return, comparing them to servants waiting for their master. He said, “Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning” (verse 35). This imagery reminds us of the need to remain spiritually alert and prepared, for Christ may return at any moment.

Watchfulness is not passive waiting but an active, faithful obedience to God. Jesus warned that the servant who is found diligent when the master returns will be blessed (verse 37), but the one who grows careless, thinking his master delays, will face severe consequences (verse 46). This passage challenges us to examine our lives: Are we living in a way that honors God? Are we using our gifts, time, and opportunities wisely?

Jesus also teaches that responsibility comes with knowledge. “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” (verse 48). The more we understand God’s truth, the more accountable we are for how we live it out. We cannot afford spiritual complacency; instead, we must live with urgency, sharing the gospel and growing in holiness.

The world tempts us to relax our vigilance, but Jesus calls us to keep our lamps burning—staying in His Word, praying and serving faithfully. When He returns, may He find us watching, ready to welcome Him with joy.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Are you living each day with an expectation of Christ’s return? How can you remain spiritually watchful in your daily life? In what ways can you faithfully serve God with the resources He has given you?
