Daily Devotional for Friday, November 28
Faithfulness
“I am my beloved’s, and his desire is toward me. Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field; let us lodge in the villages,” Song of Solomon 7:10, 11.
My wife often tells the story of her mother’s parting words as she left the house and went out into the world for something or another. Her mother would say, “Don’t forget who you belong to!” At our wedding, the preacher told the congregation how the wedding band she put on my finger showed the world that I belonged to her. While in Israel, we bought her a ring with the above verse in Hebrew. I hope readers can see a trend here. That is how a husband and wife should be toward one another. Their relationship should be exclusive and faithful.
God repeatedly tells us that we belong to Him and no one else. We will not make a list of verses that tell us this because the devotional would be pages long, and I only get three hundred fifty words. God is a jealous God. We are to have no other gods before Him. The unfaithfulness of His children is often compared to adultery. Idolatry has always been a problem for the children of God, and even today, the norm is that those who belong to Jesus are not faithful. Spiritual adultery is rampant in the house of God.
If we are saved children of God, we belong to Jesus. The writer said, “I am my beloveds.” Do we belong to Jesus, and is He our beloved? The writer also told us that the desire of the bridegroom is toward her. Jesus loved us enough to die for us, and He never stops loving us. If the bride is out being unfaithful, it is not because our bridegroom failed us. The problem of unfaithfulness is with us and only us.
JUST A THOUGHT
Are you a faithful bride? When your groom returns to bring you home, what will He find you doing, and who will you be with?
