The Faithful Steward
“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful,” 1 Corinthians 4:2.
I admire over-the-road truck drivers. It is hard, taxing work, requiring great concentration and skill. I am thankful for their sacrifices to keep our economy moving. It would not work for me, though. I get sleepy while driving and must eat to stay awake. I normally get a small bag of chips to munch on when I need to drive a long way. I always plan to eat the chips slowly and make them last, but it seems like I finish the bag shortly after leaving the convenience store parking lot. I do not steward that bag of chips well.
To be a steward means to be the one who oversees or manages something. Normally a steward supervises the money or property of someone else. In our passage, Paul and his companions served as stewards of the mysteries of God. God had given them the responsibility to share the gospel, to explain the new dispensation of the church, and to reveal the Word of God to the Gentiles. To do this, it required them to be faithful. What they were revealing and what they were building was not their own. They could not just say what they wanted nor could they build what they wanted. It was God’s message, God’s plans and God’s church. God required faithfulness from Paul and his companions to carry out this task according to His desires.
In a similar manner, we are stewards of all that God has given us. Our health, life, talent, money, skills and everything else are His, given to us to carry out His plans and mission for our lives. We are called to be faithful in using these things for His glory and for His cause.
REFLECTION
God has not necessarily called you to be the best at everything you do, but He has called you to be faithful in everything you do. Faithfulness is success.
