The Crisis and Concern
“And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed,” Luke 16:1-3.
In this parable, Jesus presented a steward who suddenly found himself in a crisis. He was accused of mismanaging his master’s resources and was told to give an account of his stewardship. The reality of losing his position, his provision and his purpose weighed heavily on him. He was neither physically equipped to labor nor emotionally prepared to beg. His concern became how to survive and maintain security after his dismissal.
This moment revealed a deeper truth for each of us: One day, we will all give an account to God for how we have handled the time, gifts and opportunities He entrusted to us. Have we been faithful stewards of His grace, or have we, like the unjust steward, wasted what was given?
The crisis revealed the steward’s concern—how to secure his future. Though his motives later in the parable are flawed, his awareness of accountability is something we should all take seriously. We live in a temporary stewardship. Our relationships, resources and responsibilities all belong to God, and He expects us to manage them with purpose and integrity.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
