The Warning About the Second Coming

“In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot’s wife. Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it,” Luke 17:31-33.

Jesus gave this powerful warning as He spoke about His return—a day that will come suddenly and without warning. In these verses, Jesus cautions against the dangerous pull of earthly attachments. The image is clear: when the moment comes, there will not be time to run back for anything. The urgency of obedience must outweigh any desire to cling to the things of this world.

Jesus then gave a three-word reminder that echoes through history: “Remember Lot’s wife” (verse 32). Her story is found in Genesis 19, where she was delivered from the judgment of Sodom but looked back in longing, disobeying God’s instruction—and she was turned into a pillar of salt. Her glance backward was not just curiosity; it was a heart still tethered to the world she was told to leave behind.

In the same way, Jesus warns that at His coming, there can be no turning back. We must live each day in readiness, with hearts fully surrendered. The desire to “save our life”—to cling to comfort, possessions or personal plans—will only lead to loss. But those who give it all to Christ will find life eternal.

This is not a call to fear but to faith. Let go of what will not last, and hold fast to what does. His return is sure. The question is: are you ready?

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Do not let earthly things delay your obedience to eternal truth. Live today with your heart turned toward His coming.
