Vows of Faithfulness
“Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame,” Song of Solomon 8:6.
Permanent Seal—In this passage, the beloved pleads to be set as a seal upon the heart and arm of their lover, signifying a permanent and unbreakable bond. A seal in biblical times represented ownership, authenticity and security. As believers, our vow of faithfulness to God should be like a seal—permanent and visible. Just as a seal cannot be easily removed or broken, our commitment to God should be unwavering and steadfast. We are called to love Him with all our heart, soul, and strength, reflecting His love in every aspect of our lives.
Passionate Love—The intensity of love described here is profound. It is as strong as death and as unyielding as the grave. Our love for Him should be passionate, igniting our hearts with a fire that cannot be extinguished by life’s challenges. This passionate love is not just an emotion but a consuming force that drives our actions and decisions, compelling us to live in a way that honors Him.
Persistent Commitment—The imagery of many waters and floods trying to quench love but failing illustrates the persistent nature of true love. Our commitment to God must endure through trials and tribulations, remaining steadfast even when faced with overwhelming challenges. This unwavering faithfulness reflects the persistent nature of God’s love for us—a love that never fails, never gives up and never runs dry.
CLOSING THOUGHT
Our lives should be lived in faithfulness to God in response to His great love for us.
