The Folly of a Fool
“As snow in the summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool. As the dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly,” Proverbs 26:1, 11.
God uses His creation in many ways to help us understand things we should do or things we should not do. In the verses of this devotional, He used the weather and some animals to compare to being a fool. God gave different seasons for you to enjoy certain things. Seasons are used to know when to plant or when to gather.
The summer months are enjoyed by engaging in many outdoor activities, so if it snowed that would not only put a damper on all those activities, but also outdoor plants or gardens. The same goes for harvest. The harvest is done before the rains come so the crops are not destroyed. The same concept applies to a fool. To give a fool honor would be foolish! Honor is not suitable for a person who is not walking in wisdom or righteousness.
Why is a whip used on a horse? Or a bridle? These things are used to control the horse and to give the horse boundaries, so it learns to obey. Discipline is in God’s design. When boundaries are overstepped, it can cause trouble for many. A foolish person does not like boundaries but, through disciplinary actions, hopefully, will learn.
The example of a dog returning to its vomit is a vivid picture of how ignorant people can be sometimes. The thought of this is gross; you would not even think about returning to your vomit to eat it (that is what a dog does). So why would you continue to be a fool once you have learned better instructions through the Word of God?
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
God rewards you according to your works. Will they be foolish or wise?
