Water from the Rock

“Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel,” Exodus 17:6.

Every parent has heard the words, “Mom, Dad, I’m thirsty!” If you wait too long to meet the demand, the situation will quickly devolve into desperation; “I’m dying of thirst!” Moses often dealt with similar complaints from the children of Israel on more than one occasion. As angry as the Israelites were with Moses due to their lack of water, there was not a thing he could do to provide for them. But he could go to the source and that is exactly what he did (verse 4). The people drank water from the rock that day and we know that Rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4).

In the same way the Israelites were suffering physical thirst, there is a thirsting in the souls of men. When Jesus met the woman at the well, He said, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:13, 14). The Lord Jesus is the source of living water for thirsty souls in this dry and barren world.

The woman at the well was so overjoyed that she left her waterpot to tell everyone about her encounter with the Christ. “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” (John 4:29). Are you excited to share the source of everlasting life? Jesus is the Living Water, the answer to the thirsty soul. Lead others to Him so they may drink and never thirst again.

REFLECTION

“Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation” (Isaiah 12:3).
