Faithful Stewardship Required

“For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him,” Luke 19:26.

The Olympics are a time to remind us that we are all mere mortals, but some of us are more mere than others. Every time I watch the Olympics, I think that it would be a good idea to put an average person in each race or competition, just to remind us of how good the Olympic athletes are. Humans have different reactions to watching the Olympics. For some, from the comfort of their couch, they begin thinking that they could probably do some of those sports, almost as well as some of the people they are watching on the television. For others, they think there is no way they could ever do it that fast or precise, so there is no need to ever try. Neither reaction is justified: both show faulty reasoning through a faulty comparison.

Sometimes we do this in our Christian walk as well. We might see someone handle a situation very well, or maybe we see someone do a great act of service. As we think about ourselves in that situation, we might think we could have done that better, or we might think that we could never do that. Either way, we fall into sin with this kind of thinking. We either sin by arrogance and pride, pulling the other person down and falsely elevating ourselves, or we sin by failing to do what God has called us to do. Either way, we are not being faithful.

God has given us a certain set of skills, talents and opportunities. He does not expect us to steward these in the same manner as everyone else. But He does expect faithful stewardship.

REFLECTION

To not steward what He has given in a faithful manner is an act of rebellion against God.
