The Mustard Seed and Yeast
“Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it. And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened,” Luke 13:18-21.
Jesus paints a picture of the kingdom of God using two simple, everyday examples—a mustard seed and leaven (yeast). The mustard seed is tiny, almost insignificant to the eye, yet, it grows into a large tree, offering shelter and rest to birds. In the same way, the kingdom of God often begins small in our lives. A whispered prayer, a quiet act of kindness, or a moment of faith may seem small, but under God’s hand, it grows beyond what we could imagine.
Leaven or yeast is hidden in dough, quietly working from within until the entire batch is transformed. This illustrates how God’s kingdom works in our hearts—often unseen, but always active. Transformation may not be immediate, but as we yield to His Spirit, we are changed from the inside out.
These parables remind us not to despise small beginnings. God specializes in growing the tiny into the mighty and using the hidden to bring lasting change. Our responsibility is to plant the seed, to be open to the leaven and to trust God’s timing and power.
TODAY’S THOUGHT
What may seem small and unnoticed today can become something great in God’s kingdom. Trust the process—He is always working, even in the hidden things.
