The Return of the Younger Son
“And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!” Luke 15:17.
The story of the prodigal son is one of the most touching displays of grace and restoration found in the Bible. The younger son, after wasting his inheritance in reckless living, finds himself alone, starving and desperate. But then, a powerful moment occurred—“he came to himself.” In his brokenness, he remembered his father’s goodness. This turning point is not just about returning home, but about turning his heart back toward the one who never stopped loving him.
As he journeyed home, rehearsing his apology, he likely feared rejection. But while he was still a great way off, his father sees him, had compassion, and ran to him. The embrace, the kiss, the robe, the ring, the shoes—all were symbols of full restoration. The father did not scold or shame him; instead, he celebrated. “For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found” (verse 24). This is not just a family reunion—it is a picture of how God receives us when we repent.
No matter how far we have wandered, how badly we have failed, or how long we have been gone, the Father’s arms are always open. True repentance begins with honesty, and grace meets us not with condemnation but with restoration. The younger son returned expecting punishment but received a party.
Let this passage remind us that we serve a God who delights in mercy and rejoices over every sinner who comes home.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
God’s grace reaches further than our guilt. When we come to ourselves and return to Him, we find more than forgiveness—we find restoration. The Father is waiting to welcome us with joy.
