Character Counts

“A good man obtaineth favour of the Lord; but a man of wicked devices will he condemn. A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised,” Proverbs 11:24, 25 .

One definition of character is moral excellence and firmness. A person’s character is known by the attributes that make up and distinguish an individual. Whether you are a parent, grandparent or anyone who has been responsible for young children, you understand much of how your communication with them or discipline to them will shape their character.

As a child of God, you have His Word to shape your spiritual character. He is called your Heavenly Father because at salvation you entered into a new and intimate relationship with Him. As an earthly father has much to do with shaping the physical, mental and emotional character of his children, largely in part by being an example in his actions, God is the One who shapes you spiritually. He has given you His Word as an example of who He is and the kind of character He wants to develop in you. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2).

In order for God to shape your character, you need to have your mind renewed by His Word. When you are born physically, you start out new to grow and mature. It is the same spiritually; you start as a babe in Christ and through the Word you grow and mature. These verses in today’s devotional contrast a person who does not listen to God’s instructions with someone who does. If you truly desire to grow in God’s character, you will do your best to obey God’s Word by being wise with the choices and decisions you make.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Wisdom is choosing God. His Word shows you the way, and only by being a doer of His Word do you grow and mature.
