Pride Goes Before Destruction
“How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” Proverbs 16:16.
Our key verses provide profound wisdom about the perils of pride and the virtues of humility. The teaching of these verses can be summed up in the well-known phrase from Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” This teaches us that pride can lead to our downfall, while humility and wisdom can guide us to success and fulfillment.
Pride can be compared to building a fragile house of cards. When we stack these cards too high, believing in our invincibility, the structure becomes unstable and eventually collapses. Similarly, when we become overly confident and arrogant, we set ourselves up for failure. Pride blinds us to our weaknesses and makes us less receptive to advice and correction, leading to inevitable mistakes.
In contrast, humility acts as a sturdy foundation. A humble person recognizes his limitations and seeks guidance and wisdom from others and from God. Proverbs 16:19 states, “Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.”
Ultimately, humility fosters an attitude of gratitude and a willingness to learn. Proverbs 16:20 reads, “He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.” Trusting in God and handling matters with wisdom ensures that we find true happiness and success.
APPLICATION
In our daily lives, we should strive to practice humility by being open to feedback, showing kindness to others, and acknowledging our dependence on God. By doing so, we build resilient and meaningful lives, much like well-constructed houses on solid foundations.
