The Pharisees’ Letters of Recommendation

“Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?” 2 Corinthians 3:1.
In the early church, it was common for ministers or traveling teachers to carry letters of recommendation to prove their reliability and authority. When Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth, he asked a question filled with meaning: did he really need such a letter? After all, these very believers were the result of his ministry. Their changed lives were the true testimony of his calling—letters not written with ink but by the Spirit of the living God (verse 3).
Paul was drawing a contrast between himself and those false teachers who depended on outward credentials and human praise. Much like the Pharisees in Jesus’ time, they were more concerned about reputation than genuine transformation. They displayed their religion for show, but their hearts remained unchanged. Paul’s ministry, on the other hand, was marked by spiritual fruit, not self-promotion. The people he led to Christ were living proof of God’s work through him—living letters that anyone could read.
This truth still challenges us today. Our value in God’s service is not proven by position, popularity or applause, but by the quiet evidence of God’s grace working in and through us. The most convincing testimony of the gospel is a transformed life—a heart made new by Christ and a walk that reflects His character.

Thought For Today
Heaven keeps no record of titles or earthly praise. What matters most is that our lives bear the handwriting of God’s grace—clearly seen, deeply felt and faithfully lived out before others.
