The Reason for the Gift of Tongues

“And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church,” 1 Corinthians 14:35.

The modern woman of today’s world stands in direct opposition to the virtuous woman of the Bible. Feminists of the world scream for equal rights when truly, they demand to be superior to men. Yet, God teaches wives to respect and be submissive to their husbands. The modern woman puts her own career and ambitions above everything else, including her family. The godly woman is selfless and puts the needs of her family first. The pressure to conform to the worldly standard of womanhood impacts ladies everywhere. But God upholds the virtuous woman and blesses her greatly.

God has given a clear picture of what a godly woman looks like as well as standards concerning women in the church. In Paul’s teaching to the church at Corinth concerning the gifts of prophesying and tongues, women were to keep silent. Also, in his letter to Timothy he says, “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence” (1 Timothy 2:12). While women play an important role in the Lord’s churches, we must be careful to remember God’s order. Only men are to be pastors and teachers of men within the church. Women are to teach other women and children.

I encourage you as a woman of faith to tune out the world and their constant praise of the modern woman. Instead, study to know what pleases the Lord. Proverbs 19:14 says that a prudent wife is from the Lord. 1 Peter 3:4 tells us that a meek and quiet spirit is in the sight of God of great price. Strive to be humble and submissive to the Lord in all things.

REFLECTION

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).
