Indictment of the Evil Generation

“And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation,” Luke 11:29, 30. 

Jesus’ words in Luke 11:29-36 are a sobering rebuke to those who constantly demand proof but refuse to believe. The people in His time witnessed miracles, heard divine wisdom, and yet, still asked for a sign. Their hearts were hardened, craving spectacles rather than truth. Jesus pointed them to the sign of Jonah—just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale for three days, so, He would be in the grave before rising again. Yet, many would still reject Him. 

This indictment of an evil generation extends beyond Christ’s time. Today, people still seek worldly evidence before believing in God. They chase after signs, emotions and personal experiences rather than trusting in the finished work of Christ. But faith is not built on seeing miracles—it is built on surrendering to the truth of God’s Word. 

Jesus also spoke of light and darkness, warning that if our spiritual eyes are dim, our whole “body will be full of darkness” (Luke 11:34). If we allow sin, doubt and worldliness to cloud our vision, we cannot truly see Christ for who He is. The people in Jesus’ time had the Light of the World among them, yet, they chose blindness.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE 

Let us not be like them. Instead of demanding signs, let us walk by faith, not by sight, and allow His truth to shine brightly in us.
