The Correction of a Child
“Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell,” Proverbs 23:13, 14.
Today’s passage provides valuable insights into the correction and guidance of children, emphasizing the importance of discipline grounded in love and wisdom. It began with a clear directive: “Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die” (verse 13). This verse, often misunderstood, highlighted the necessity of discipline in a child’s upbringing. The rod symbolized correction that, though sometimes uncomfortable, is essential for growth and learning.
The following verse reinforced this idea, “Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell” (verse 14). Proper discipline is not about punishment for punishment’s sake but about guiding children away from harmful paths and toward righteousness. It is about saving their souls and shaping their characters for the better.
Verses 15, 16 expressed the joy and pride a parent feels when a child walks in wisdom. “My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.” A child who heeds correction and chooses wisdom brings immense joy to a parent’s heart, showcasing the fruits of diligent and loving discipline.
Lastly, verse 21 warned against the consequences of gluttony and drunkenness: “For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.” Teaching children to avoid these pitfalls ensures that they grow up to be responsible and disciplined adults.
