A Crown of Glory
“The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness. He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city,”
Proverbs 16:31, 32.
As a young child, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. Both were hardworking in their business and in their home. This was a great example to all their family. In their retirement years, they enjoyed the fruit of their labor not only materially but also with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Not everyone may have had this example, but there was a time when spending time with elderly people was cherished. To have the opportunity to listen to their stories of times gone by and to glean any bit of wisdom from them is very precious.
Proverbs 3:16 informs us, “Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.” The “she” is referring to wisdom and verse thirteen states, “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom.” The hoary head in the devotional verse refers to the aged. Aging is often equated with wisdom. If you have lived a life of righteousness which means you have walked in wisdom, then you are added a length of days when you can enjoy life and family.
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her; and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her” (Proverbs 4:7, 8).
It is one’s hope that as a person grows in age, he also grows and matures in faith. By the time you are gray-headed, a life of wisdom will bring you honor. Another thing that will bring you honor is if you are able to control your anger.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Wisdom and self-control will bring you great blessings. It is often difficult to wait, but the Bible is clear, good things come to those who wait.
