The Lord of the Vineyard
“And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder,” Luke 20:17, 18.
In these few verses, Jesus illustrated two profound truths: the rejection of God’s chosen cornerstone, and the consequences of resisting Him. Quoting Psalm 118:22, He identified Himself as “the stone which the builders rejected” (Luke 20:17). Though the religious leaders refused to accept His authority, Jesus declared that He is the very foundation of God’s redemptive plan. What others dismissed, God exalted.
First, Jesus showed us that rejection does not negate divine purpose. Though cast aside by man, He became the cornerstone—the essential support for the spiritual structure of salvation. This brings hope to us: if Christ could be rejected and still fulfill His destiny, so can we when we walk in God’s will.
Second, Jesus illustrates the seriousness of rejecting Him. “Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken”—a picture of conviction and repentance. But if that stone falls on someone, “it will grind him to powder” (verse 18)—a picture of judgment. Either we humble ourselves before Christ and are broken to be made whole, or we resist and face eternal separation.
The chief priests and scribes understood that Jesus was speaking about them, and it only increased their desire to destroy Him. But truth, even when resisted, remains truth.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Jesus is either your cornerstone or your stumbling stone—the choice is ours. Build your life on Him now, and you will never be crushed by what is to come.
