Vision of the Plumb Line

“Thus he showed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more,” Amos 7:7, 8.

Contractors utilize a variety of tools to ensure accuracy in the structures they are building. These tools are vital to the structural integrity of the homes we live in and buildings we walk into each day. One such tool is a plumb line. It is a line with a weight at the end of it, used to ensure that a vertical wall is built straight and true. The walls of our homes provide security for our families and a loving place where we find comfort and safety.
God had set a standard of holiness and righteous living among His people, Israel. His Law was the plumb line for the Israelites to live by. Yet, Israel’s king, Jeroboam, had set up calves to worship in Bethel and Dan and established sacrifices and feast days devised in his own heart (1 Kings 12:28-33). The warnings from Amos were rejected and God’s mercy had been exhausted. The people had fallen far from the standard of God’s holiness and were building their own crooked wall according to their corrupt king.
God has a standard for His churches today; it is His holy Word. Are we building according to the plumb line of God’s Word? Are our beliefs and practices aligned with the Bible? Our lives will be measured by Christ and His Word and nothing else. What kind of wall are you building? Strive to build your life according to truth and find protection and stability in Him.

REFLECTION
“For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9).
