Train Up a Child
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it,” Proverbs 22:6.
Proverbs 22 offers timeless wisdom on the importance of early instruction and the virtues that shape a righteous life. It begins with a well-known directive, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (verse 6). The habits, values and faith instilled in children guide them throughout their lives, which will form a strong foundation that withstands the trials of adulthood.
In verses 7-9, we see practical counsel intertwined with moral teaching. “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7) reminds us of the consequences of financial imprudence. It encourages parents to teach their children the importance of stewardship and avoiding debt.
The passage continues with a focus on integrity and righteousness. “He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend” (Proverbs 22:11) highlights the value of sincerity and pure motives. Teaching children to value honesty and kindness opens doors to favor and meaningful relationships.
Proverbs 22:15 asserts, “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” Discipline, when administered with love and wisdom, is essential in guiding children away from foolishness and toward wisdom.
Verses 13-16 further highlight the consequences of laziness, deceit and oppression. Teaching children to avoid these pitfalls ensures that they grow up to be diligent, truthful and just.
