Blessings on the Faithful Man

“A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent,” Proverbs 28: 20.

In the business world, many catchphrases get tossed around. We are a catchphrase world. Sometimes, we substitute a nifty saying for content or productive output. Sometimes, our catchy phrases must obscure what we do not know. For instance, the phrase “strategic vision” always made me feel like a company had no clue what was going on at that very moment. A helpful phrase could be, “Focus on priorities.” That makes perfect sense and is a good plan. Decide what is essential, and allocate resources to do the most important things first. That way, if something gets left out, it will not be the most vital thing.

The pairing we see above may seem odd. Is having wealth inherently evil? Of course not. God has been known to make His children rich. Do you remember Abraham? We often distort this and claim the Bible says that money is the root of all evil when that is not what the Bible means at all. What God tells us is that the love of money is the root of all evil. Our devotional verse is not teaching us that pursuing a good life is a sin. To work hard and be rich is not a sin.

This explains what seems like an odd pairing of phrases. It is not difficult to understand. This is about priorities. We will not be blessed if we chase money and success at the expense of faithfulness to God. On the other hand, the faithful will abound with blessings. Does that necessarily mean financial blessings? Of course not. Faithfulness to God rewards itself and is a blessing.

What matters most to you? Is God your priority? Or is your pursuit of wealth and happiness paramount?
