The Most Important Thing in Life

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you,” Matthew 6:33.

In an earlier devotional, we discussed priorities in the business world. Companies must have established priorities, or they will lack strategic or tactical focus. People must have priorities in their personal lives, or they will find that the important things are gone. Even our reading through Ecclesiastes has shown us what matters. What matters is God and the things of God.

Our passage in Matthew requires care. This teaching is not a command to live irresponsible lives or to spend our lives waiting for God to feed and water us. In other places, God commands us to work hard, provide for our families and be good stewards of the things we have. On the other hand, while the above things matter, they must never be more important than God and His plans for our lives. We may think of an idol as a false god or golden calf, but this is not necessarily so. An idol is anything we consider as more important than God.

Our idols are many. Everyone probably thinks of the obvious and cliche things such as sports and money; they both can take the place of God. Married people, did you know you can make your spouse an idol? If Jesus is not your primary relationship, then the person who is has become your idol. That could be your spouse. If making a living becomes more important than God, it is time to change jobs.

What matters most to you? If the answer is not Jesus, your priorities are misplaced. You must recall how important you were to Him while He was on that cross.

JUST A THOUGHT

If we make God our priority, He will provide our needs. We must remember that He knows our needs better than we do.
