The Reminder
2 Corinthians 9:6-9
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver,” 2 Corinthians 9:7.
If you want to stir people up, just mention the idea of financial giving for the church’s work. Call it tithing, and some people really go into a tailspin. The debate can get intense, and we will not be having it here. Sadly, some preachers particularly have done much to contribute to the idea that churches are all just out to get your money. One in particular comes to mind who tried to make a case that his need for a fancy jet airplane was legitimate.
So, we can debate all day, but perhaps we should take a look at what God said about giving. By the way, the context makes it clear that the discussion in this passage refers to financial giving. The subject is money.
We often forget that our sovereign God either causes or allows every event in the universe to occur, and that includes every event in your life. If you have reaped the benefit of financial success, it is because God has caused or allowed it. If you have money, it is not your money but God’s, which He has allowed you to have for a little while. The second truth is that God’s work requires financial support. Our financial support of that work is how God has chosen to use His money.
So, we can debate all day, but Scripture is clear. We all have a responsibility to give, and we should. Furthermore, we should rejoice in the opportunity to give and not consider it a chore or an imposition God has put on us. Is God having to pry your money from your hand, or do you offer it cheerfully?
Just a Thought
If God has financially blessed us, how can we be so stingy in giving an offering back to His work?
