Remember Your Creator

“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; while the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain,” Ecclesiastes 12:1, 2.

Much anecdotal evidence shows that the older a person is the less likely he is to become believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. The likelihood of being saved as a young person is higher than that of an older person. Along with anecdotal evidence, some studies support this conclusion. This happens for many reasons, but this is not the point today.

We can draw some conclusions about the person being warned in our devotional passage. As we have discussed, much of Ecclesiastes warns us to make God the focus of our lives because anything besides God is vanity, folly and useless. The warning in this passage seems more serious, having eternal ramifications.

How many get caught up in the pleasures of youth only to die young and lost? How many waste their lives on the pleasures of youth, realize their error but do not know a better alternative? How sad it is to realize you have wasted your life, are scared and alone and have no clue what to do about it.

Young readers, remember God while you still can. Stop wasting your lives on the world’s vanity and focus on the important thing—God. Older reader, you may have wasted your life, but if you are reading this, it is not too late. If you are breathing, you can still remember God.

One last thought. Your ability to remember God only lasts while you are alive and breathing. God’s offer of salvation is only for the living. After that, your eternal remembrance will be of how you rejected God.

JUST A THOUGHT

A life devoted to the things of this world is a wasted life.
