The Amplified Bible (AMP) provides a unique method for allowing the reader to get a glimpse into the original meaning of the texts. The project that produced the AMP Bible, begun by Mrs. Frances Siewert through the Lockman Foundation, sought to ensure that the translation was not only accurate to the ancient texts but also readable to the user. In conjunction with other translations and resources the AMP opens the ancient texts to the contemporary reader in a format that even today it is understandable.
The AMP Bible, in translation, intended for the text to be read and understood by the reader. On initial inspection of the texts, especially those with amplifications, one may be turned off to the readability. However, with the 2015 edition especially, the translators and editors sought to make the text readable with or without the amplifications. Once the reader gets a feel for the use of the punctuation surrounding the amplifications, the reading gets easier.
The AMP Bible may be useful for personal study, but it is not likely to be one that many would choose to read aloud. The punctuation and information within the amplifications are intended to, after learning the format, flow naturally and help the reader to understand. When read aloud the amplifications, in some areas, can clutter the text making audible understanding more difficult.
