David’s Travail and Trust
“Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength. Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth,” Psalm 54:1, 2.
Petty arguments come from petty people. Two neighbors who lived near me became enemies over childish things. I mowed the yard for one of them, and in a place where their yards joined, some of the grass from one side blew to the other side. I was warned to never get grass on that side again. Like small children, each of these two neighbors warned me about the other. They shared a driveway, and at the end of it there was a T that went to either house. They had drawn a line and neither was allowed on the opposite side. One neighbor even put bricks just inside his side of the line so that if his neighbor tried to back out, he would hit the bricks.
David did not have that kind of an enemy. He had enemies who wanted him dead and who tried to carry it out. He had enemies who wanted his family hurt and attempted to carry it out. He had enemies who wanted his kingdom destroyed and attempted to carry it out. These were real enemies, and often David had no power against them. His only recourse was prayer and trust.
We may not have enemies like these, but we often face challenges and trials wherein we have no strength, and we have no way to physically face them. But we do have that same ability to pray, and we do have that same trust. Just as David leaned upon God, so can we. Biblical deliverance is not just for Bible times. Prayer and trust also function today.
REFLECTION
There is no shame in crying out to God about your total inability; this is actually the beginning of strength.
