Asaph’s Song

“I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings,” Psalm 77:11, 12.

The children of Israel witnessed many wonders and works of the Lord; not only in Egypt regarding the ten plagues, but also after Pharaoh let them leave, they continued to witness the mighty hand of God in delivering them and taking care of them. Yet, this did not stop them from complaining.

Many times in the Psalms you read of complaints. So why was the complaining of Israel so different? The children of Israel complained because they lacked trust in God. Their focus was on satisfying the flesh instead of praising the Lord for His goodness. Rather than remembering the works of the Lord that delivered them from Egypt, they only remembered the food they ate and the other things that kept them content and satisfied. In their minds, they had more in their bondage than they did traveling to the Promised Land.

Asaph turned his grief and dismay into praise. He started focusing on the faithfulness, power and mercy of God. He acknowledged the Lord and gave Him praise for all the things He had done for Israel. Asaph mentioned also that God had power and control over the heavens, the earth and the seas.

In your trouble, pain, affliction, grief and trials, cry out to the Lord. Let Him know how you are feeling and what you are going through. Do not stop there though. Turn your troubles into praise. Remember the times God has delivered you and comforted you. Remember His mighty works!
