Faith of a Centurion

Pride is death. Pride caused Lucifer to be ejected from God’s Heaven. He then used pride to entice Adam and Eve to commit the first sin and be ejected from the Garden of Eden. Today, pride is the thing that keeps so many from believing in the promises of God. You are proud that you are good enough to earn Heaven. You are proud of your strength and self-reliance. You are proud of the things you have supposedly amassed for yourself by your own skill and resources.

Sadly, the more important the person, the greater the pride he often possess. The more important a person sees himself as, the less likely he is to feel any need to submit to God. That is one reason why God has more appeal to the poor, marginalized, exploited or downtrodden; they know their lives are lacking and that their needs are great.

The centurion in this passage was certainly an important person, with seemingly great authority in this earth; he told Jesus this. It must have been difficult for him to humble himself before an itinerant preacher and ask for help; yet he did just that. This is quite amazing! While many other important people were rejecting Jesus or plotting how to kill Him, this very important man believed the promises of eternal life.

JUST A THOUGHT: When you fail to serve because you are awaiting that important call, you have forgotten that all of God’s work is of vital importance.
