David’s Wonderful Friend
“Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence. The God of my mercy shall prevent [go before] me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies,” Psalm 59:9, 10.
When I was twelve years old, I had a newspaper route and had to go to the door to collect the monthly fee from people for receiving the paper. On one such occasion, I went to the door and a boy that I went to school with, who was two grades ahead of me and three years older than me, answered the door. This young man was a lot taller and bigger than I was, and at school he had tried to bully me a few times. When I left the house, he proceeded to follow me and came up to me and said he wanted to fight me, though I did not know why. As he was about to swing and hit me, a friend from church was driving by and stopped. He jumped in between the boy and me and defended me from this bully and told him to pick on someone his own size.
The world is full of bullies, and God is that friend that we can wait for to defend us and keep us from having to fight our own battles (verses 9, 10). The Lord will always be the friend we can depend on no matter what we face in this life. Jesus showed us that there is no greater friend than one who will lay down his life for his friends and calls us His friend if we will do what He commands us to do (John 15:13, 14). I can take comfort in knowing I have a friend like David had. “Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy” (Psalms 59:17).
THOUGHT
God wants us all to have the same kind of friend that David had. Jesus offers that kind of friendship.
