Results of Sowing
"For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting;· Galatians 6:8.
One day when I was on recess duty, my students ran up to me to tell me to come look at the plant growing along the fence line. When I went to look at it, I had no idea what type of plant it was. The fruit was a yellow color and looked similar to a squash or pumpkin, but it had weird markings on it. Wanting to teach my students how to be investigative scientists, I altered my lesson plans for the afternoon and had the students go back outside to take pictures of the plant and its fruit and record any observations they made. We spent the rest of the school day doing research to classify this plant, andbefore the bell rang, each group was to present their conclusions. As they shared their findings, every group presented their evidence and research for completely different plants. After school I got to talk to the custodian and mentioned the weird fruit on the vine along the fence. Turns out, someone had thrown out a watermelon last year, and after a vine sprouted, he had been spraying chemicals on it to try to get rid of it.
Farmers know better than anyone, you reap what you sow. We cannot get pumpkins by planting watermelon seeds. Paul wrote in this verse that if we continue to use our energy to pursue ungodly and lustful desires, only corruption, meaning that which does not endure, will be produced. If we follow after the Spirit, however, our rewards are everlasting rewards, not temporal or perishing. While satisfying the flesh may seem desirable, it only leads to destruction. Eternal rewards in Heaven will last forever and are for those who submit to the Spirit. Every person has the choice to follow after the flesh or be led by the Spirit and has to make that choice himself.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
May we reap the fruit of the Spirit by being firmly planted in Christ.
