The Main Focus of Preaching

“And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom,
declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among
you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified,” 1 Corinthians 2:1, 2.

“Young men, this whole affair isn’t about you or me. It isn’t about what one culture holds to be important as opposed to another. This is about JESUS! We must not put ourselves above Him. And we must recognize that there are matters of Christian culture that supersede all those of worldly order. When we preach, we must exalt the Lord. To do otherwise is to abuse our privilege before mankind and to waste our time on things that are insignificant and paltry.” (To My Students)—Memoirs of a Missionary, Glen Knight

Generations come and go through time, and provided one is old enough, marked changes can be seen, some good and some not so. This is true in most every aspect of life and it is especially true in ministry. There was a time when preaching styles emulated the great Christian evangelists of a bygone era. The so-called fire in the pulpit was usually gauged by the volume of the preacher but often, not so much the content of the message. And the results of the meeting were measured by the souls in the altar. Times have changed. While some may look longingly back, the fact of the present is for us to deal with now. New styles of preaching and teaching God’s Word have emerged and no doubt with similar results. Some folks look more at smooth style rather than sincere and truthful content. And music…that is also quite the story! But what is so vital for us to understand is that still today, as always, “Jesus Christ, and him crucified” remains the drama of time and eternity; the most vital message for the human race!

AN AMAZING TRUTH!
Obedience to the call of the gospel is salvation to the soul of mankind
