The Apostles Stand for the Word

As a young Pastor I was faced with an intense church matter that weighed heavy on my soul. No matter what the outcome, there would be some that would be offended and possibly leave the church. A dear senior saint encouraged this young Pastor by saying “just tell us what the Word says, show love to all of us, and let the Lord sort it out.” Of course, many situations are more nuanced than this, but her counsel has been an encouragement to me ever since.

When faced with legal and social conflict due to proclaiming God’s Word, the Apostles did not waver at all. These men had seen the power of God accompany the Word of God and they were convinced it was the eternal truth. These Apostles could have been facing jail time, physical pain, even death. Yet, they stood firm on the truth of God’s Word and did not falter in the face of punishment.

Every Christian is faced with this same dilemma every day of our lives. We must faithfully share the Word of God with everyone we meet. At times, we will be confronted with people who are offended by the Word of God. Human nature may lead us to skip the difficult portions of Scripture or alter their meanings if they would offend. Yet, we must, like the Apostles, be faithful to declare the Word of God and watch the power of God at work in the lives of the hearers.

Reflection: Share the Word of God boldly, faithfully, and lovingly. No matter the circumstances.
