David’s Petitions

“One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple  Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation,” Psalm 27:4, 9.

Once as a young man, my friends and I got into trouble, and it seemed to be the end of the world for me at the time. At home, I felt such shame and regret in my situation that I could hardly wait for Sunday to come so I could go to church because I would be surrounded by people that cared for me but did not know of my trouble. I remember thinking of how it was such a relief to be at church. I knew God would forgive me, but I was not sure about my parents.

When times were tough, we see in the Psalms that David turned to the Lord, and his petition was to be able to dwell in the house of the Lord all of his life (verse 4). I could relate to David’s petitions when I faced trouble in my own life, and I looked to the Lord to deliver me and not forget about me or turn His back on me (verse 9). When David realized that the Lord would lift him up above the problems, he said he would sing praises to the Lord (verse 6). If we would realize that God is always working on our behalf, we would give Him praise in all situations: “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

JUST A THOUGHT
“And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him” (1 John 5:15).
