“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment,” 1 Corinthians 1:10.
Before the advent of today’s high priced electronic entertainment, fun had to come at a cheaper price. One thing we liked was a good game of tug-of-war. One might think the strongest team would always win this game, but this was not always true. The team that won was usually the one that was best organized. The victory most often went to the team that worked the closest together. Pulling together as one, in most cases, trumped seemingly greater strength. As long as each person did what they were good at, and they all did it in unison, a team that seemed weaker could resoundingly win.
The work of the kingdom is analogous in some ways to that. The resistance we face often seems stronger than we are on the surface. It can seem there are dozens of strong men and women on the other side against only a few of us who seem weaker. Yet, the analogy works because a few pulling and working in unison can overcome the strong.
In our passage, Paul was quick to point out that divisions undermine the work of the kingdom. The believers were not to be of Paul, Apollos or Cephas. They were to be one, working toward the common goal of reaching the lost world for Jesus. All it takes is for each of us to do what we have been called to do. What about you? Are you doing what you are called to do, or are you worried another will get some credit and glory that you will not get?
JUST A THOUGHT: Sometimes we act as if having one spirit is difficult. How can this be when the same Holy Spirit lives in us all?
